Don Cusack’s Top 5 Records To Play At My Funeral

December 27th marks a very somber day in my life. It marks the day my dad passed from cancer and in one of those freak of nature sadness trifecta’s his sisters husband passed within days also. It’s also of note that my grandmother passed roughly a year before around the exact same date. I wrote a song about this on the album that is aptly titled December 27th and the lyrics can be found in the entry right before this. So in a fitting fashion I have decided to make todays list the top 5 songs I’d like played at my funeral.

The Jackson 5 – Mama’s Pearl: It’s my funeral and I’ll play what I want to damnit. This song is one of my favorites and can instantly change my mood upon hearing it. I’d hope it had the same effect on a room full of mourners.

Stevie Wonder – They Won’t Go When I Go: This song sums up death perfectly to me. It sounds so somber and just kinda puts you in the mind of taking a trip no one else can take with you. It took me so long to appreciate this album and this song was one of the reasons why but one day it all just hit me like a ton of bricks.

Tony Tone Toni – Party Don’t Cry: My cousin Kijuan (I shout him out on Forgot To Say) passed around the year this House of Music dropped. He was probably the biggest influence on me of any human being I’ve ever encountered but that’s a whole other story. I played this song a lot to help me cope with his passing. The message really resonates with me.

George Harrison – My Sweet Lord: I love this song. I saw the Billy Preston live version being advertised on some Time Life Collection shit one night before I discovered the Beatles and ended up stumbling upon George Harrison’s version. I really like how its non denominational and is just about wanting to see the Lord regardless of faith.

Donny Hathaway – Someday We’ll All Be Free: This song saved my life in ways that I don’t choose to disclose. Lets just say that at the time when this album found me it was probably evidence that there is a greater force watching over us.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Tanya Morgan – Forgot to Say: The song was intended as a thank you to loved ones.
Earth, Wind & Fire – September: Why? BECAUSE ITS MY DAMN FUNERAL

EDITORS NOTE:
*I would still like to be on a spring loaded board in my casket and randomly be popped up like a Jack in The Box during my funeral. That has not changed and I don’t plan on letting it. As Megan would say we gotta keep the FUN in funeral.

Now when I intially saw the title of the blog post I thought you were going towards the path of humor and have songs by Luke or 2 Live Crew but after peeping each song and their significance, it reminds me of how I often try to figure out which album or which song could be used on the soundtrack to my life. Dope post
